How Utah Summers Destroy Car AC Systems (And How to Protect Yours)

May 15, 2025·5 min read·Murphy's Auto Repair

Ogden summers regularly hit 100°F+. That kind of heat puts serious stress on your vehicle's AC system. Here's what breaks, why, and what to do about it.

Car AC systems are designed to handle heat — but Utah's combination of intense summer sun, high temperatures, and wide temperature swings creates conditions that accelerate wear faster than most climates. If your AC isn't blowing as cold as it used to, it's not your imagination.

What the Heat Does to Your AC

The AC compressor is the most heat-sensitive component in the system. When ambient temperatures are high, the compressor has to work harder to move refrigerant through the system. Extended operation under high load — typical in stop-and-go Ogden traffic on a 100°F day — shortens compressor life significantly.

Heat also accelerates refrigerant leaks. The seals and hoses in an AC system expand and contract with temperature. Over many Utah summers, they develop micro-cracks that allow refrigerant to slowly escape. A system that was fine last October may blow warm air in June because it's now low on refrigerant.

Signs Your AC Needs Attention

  • AC blows cool but not cold — often means low refrigerant
  • AC only works when driving, not at idle — compressor or condenser issue
  • Warm air from all vents — possible compressor failure or major leak
  • Clicking or squealing when AC kicks on — compressor clutch problem
  • Bad smell when AC runs — mold on the evaporator, common in humid conditions
  • Water dripping inside the cabin — blocked condensate drain

The Recharge Myth

Those DIY recharge cans at the auto parts store are a temporary fix at best. If your AC is low on refrigerant, it's because there's a leak. Recharging without finding and fixing the leak means you're back in the same situation in a few weeks or months — and you've wasted money on refrigerant that just leaked out again. We find the leak first, fix it, then recharge.

Spring Is the Best Time to Service Your AC

Don't wait until July to find out your AC doesn't work. Get it inspected in April or May, before the heat hits. If there's a developing problem, we can fix it when shop wait times are shorter and parts are easier to source.

Murphy's Auto Repair services all AC refrigerant types — R-134a and R-1234yf — and backs every AC repair with a 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty.
