What Is a Multi-Point Inspection and Why Does It Matter?

May 12, 2025·4 min read·Murphy's Auto Repair

Every oil change at Murphy's includes a free multi-point inspection. Here's exactly what we check — and why catching problems early saves you money.

A multi-point inspection (MPI) is a systematic check of your vehicle's major systems — performed while we're already under your hood during an oil change. It takes about 10–15 minutes and costs you nothing extra. The goal is to catch developing problems before they become expensive emergencies.

What We Check

  • Engine oil level and condition
  • Coolant level and condition
  • Brake fluid level
  • Power steering fluid level
  • Windshield washer fluid
  • Brake pad thickness (front and rear)
  • Tire tread depth and pressure
  • Battery health and terminals
  • Air filter and cabin air filter condition
  • Belts and hoses for cracks or wear
  • Lights — headlights, taillights, brake lights
  • Visible leaks under the vehicle

What Happens If We Find Something

We show you what we found — we don't just tell you. If a brake pad is at 2mm, we'll show you the measurement. If a belt is cracked, we'll show you the belt. You decide whether to address it now or later. There's no pressure. We give you the information and let you make the call.

Why It Actually Saves You Money

A $15 drive belt caught on inspection prevents a $300 tow and a $200 emergency repair on the side of the highway. A battery flagged as weak avoids the experience of being stranded in a Utah winter parking lot. Preventive maintenance is always cheaper than reactive repair.

Murphy's includes a full multi-point inspection with every oil change — no upsell, no pressure. Just a complete picture of your vehicle's health.
